How Much Do Book Covers Matter to Boys?
Posted by FOR-PD at 10:24 am in Literacy in the News

How Much Do Book Covers Matter to Boys? Perhaps more than we may have originally considered, especially for young adult males. A cover that’s too pinkish or purplish, even if the book is written for either gender to enjoy, can often prevent boys from giving it a chance according to Alexandra Frean,’s Times Online article, “How Judging a Book by its ‘Girlie’ Cover is Putting Boys Off Reading.” Can a book really be judged by it’s cover?

So, what do boys like on their covers?

And/or, how do we get boys to go beyond the pink covers?

Readers Make Good Workers

Readers Make Good Workers
Employers find that those who seldom read for pleasure frequently lack essential skills.

Writer Diane Stafford reports that readers make good workers. She quotes Dana Gioia, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, as saying that, “reading exposes people to larger worlds than their own. Gioia also notes that “Reading teaches information, syntax, vocabulary. . . . It nourishes curiosity and rewards intellect.” Read the entire article at the Orlando Sentinel website via this link.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with Stafford and Gioia? What strategies do you use to get your students reading more and thinking beyond the pages of their textbooks? Click on the “leave a comment” icon to contribute your thoughts to our blog.
