The IRA has come out with a new book, In a Reading State of Mind: Brain Research, Teacher Modeling, and Comprehension Instruction by Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, and Diane Lapp. This book highlights how our brain works while reading as well as different modeling strategies. An added bonus to this book is a DVD, which shows actual teachers modeling the techniques mentioned in the book Please visit the book’s website to download Chapter 1 and to view a video clip from the DVD. After doing so, think about the following questions…
1. Why is modeling so important for the development of students’ reading?
2. Teachers often “tell” instead of “model”; what barriers are there to modeling?
3. What would help teachers model reading and effective reading strategies?
