Response to Intervention (RtI) is a promising way for promoting school reform that capitalizes on active and meaningful collaborations between general and special education personnel. RtI helps to bridge the gaps between research and instructional practice. What is your definition of RtI? As you know there are different models and multiple interpretations. RtI means responding to a student’s needs while maximizing her strengths by using the data available, gathering quantitative data and creating an educational priority plan. Classroom teachers take advantage of the special education personnels’ expertise and understanding of intervention strategies.

When I first heard the term Response to Intervention, it reminded me of a training I had many, (many) years ago in Montana. It was called Precision Teaching. Precision teaching also reminds me of another training I have had in recent years on creating action plans. Essentially, the commonality in all of these is recognizing a need (perhaps by analyzing data, both historical and current) planning and implementing an intervention and monitoring the progress of the intervention. After a designated period of time, the team should then evaluate the effect of the intervention and determine how to proceed.

Perhaps my definition of RTI is skewed by my schema, but in my humble opinion this is just good instruction.

I am on the RTI Team at my school, we meet, share information and establish a plan.

I’m a retired SLD Teacher. For years I developed IEP’s for my students. Each spring they would be updated and revised for the coming year. When I first heard of RTI, I thought finally something for the struggling student who doesn’t meet the criteria for a special program.

Susan Hall defines RTI in her book Implementing Response to Intervention as ‘ a dynamic problem-solving process in which data are integral in making decisions about what skills struggling readers lack, and whether intervention instruction provided to date has been effective.’ This says it all… and it isn’t just for ESE teachers - it’s for all teacher. Finally the child is put first not the curriculum.

According to Dr. Eric J. Smith (2008) Response to Instruction/Intervention (RtI) is a system that provides the framework to increase the efficiency of our statewide improvement efforts by having every educator, organization, and parent actively engaged in collaborative efforts through the use of evidence-based practices, instructionally relevant assessments, systematic problem solving to meet all students’ needs, data-based decision making, effective professional development, supportive leadership, and meaningful family involvement.

Based on his definition RtI seems to be the basis for a very wide-reaching reform effort that places student need ahead of curricular concerns. The goal seems to be to expand the efforts in the areas where they are needed.
