With regard to RtI, what data or indicators do you use to ensure that some of your students’ difficulties are not due to lack of appropriate instruction?

We need to curriculum -embedded assessments- at the student level and at the teacher level.
When we color code at unit/theme tests across a class and across a grade, our results will show us if it is the student that needs additional or different instruction or if we need to look at the teachers instruction.

I think, if I understand your question, that what you are asking is how do you know that the difficulties are not due to poor teacher instruction?

One of the things we look at is: are approximately 80% of the students in the particular classroom able to master the concept being taught. If 80% of the students are mastering the concept, then the problem is probably not teacher instruction.

According to a recent article on RtI “Assess. Instruct. Repeat.” posted in the T.H.E. Journal (05/01/09) 80-85% of students were placed in Tier 1, 10-15% in Tier 2, and only 1-5% then moved to Tier 3.
