FOR-PD Chat Transcript

Date: March 20, 2007

Time: 7:00-8:00PM EST

Topic: Technology/General Questions about FOR-PD

fac001 >> Hello everyone. Welcome to tonight's Technology Help Chat. At tonight's chat, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers about technology used in the course.

fac001 >> The chat will be an hour long and conclude at 8:00PM.

fac001 >> I would like to introduce members of the FORPD staff that are present in tonight's chat.

fac001 >> Melanie Edwards is our Helpdesk Supervisor.

fac001 >> I'm Richard Scott, FOR-PD

fac001 >> I would like to go over the chat protocol for tonight's chat. Please make sure you follow the protocol as this makes the chat flow more smoothly.

fac001 >> The Exclamation Point - !

fac001 >> An exclamation point is like raising your hand. Type this symbol whenever you have a question or a comment related to what is being discussed.

fac001 >> The Pound Sign - #

fac001 >> A pound sign indicates that you are finished typing your question or comment. Use this symbol when you are finished with your thought to indicate that you are finished typing.

fac001 >> The Ellipse - . . .

fac001 >> Use the Ellipse when you have a great deal to type so you do not keep participants waiting to read your entire thought. By breaking your comment up, you let participants know you are actively doing something rather than just typing a long response or question.

fac001 >> To type in the chat window you must type in the white box below ENTER YOUR MESSAGE HERE and then hit the enter button. What you have typed will show up in the chat window.

fac001 >> As I said earlier, this chat will cover technology issues and questions. Please make sure you follow the chat protocol if you have a question to ask or something to say.

fac001 >> If there aren't any questions about the chat protocol - I will turn the chat over to Melanie.

Melanie >> Good evening everyone.

Melanie >> Does anyone have any questions we can answer?

Janet >> ! Can you go over the steps to attach a document?

Janet >> #

Melanie >> Sure, I assume you mean how to attach a document to a discussion message.

Janet >> ! Yes#

Melanie >> While in the Discussions area, you will need to click on Compose Message.

Melanie >> Under the area where you type your message...

Melanie >> you will see a blank box with two buttons to the right...

Melanie >> click on Attach file...

Melanie >> I'm sorry; you will first need to click on Browse...

Melanie >> find the file you want to attach, then once the file name shows in the box next to Browse...

Melanie >> you will then click on Attach file...

Melanie >> the file will be listed underneath showing it has been attached. #

Melanie >> You can view the tutorials and lesson 1 for detailed instructions including screenshots.

Melanie >> Any other questions?

Melanie >> Is everyone feeling comfortable with using the various tools in WebCT?

George >> I am getting more comfortable.

George >> I just need to use all of the tools more. It has been user friendly so far.

Janet >> The more I use it the easier it is becoming.#

George >> ! Under Quizzes - Lesson Logs: Why does it say "Graded" but no grade shows?#

Melanie >> Good! Glad to hear that.

Melanie >> George...

Melanie >> The literacy logs will be graded as a whole for all the lessons at the end of the course...

Melanie >> Since they are within the Quiz tool, the WebCT system automatically grades them and assigns a grade of 0

Melanie >> This simply means that the lit log was submitted properly...

Melanie >> Your facilitator will then review the lit log and will comment something similar to "Lit Log Reviewed"

George >> ! That is good news . . . as I was starting to worry!#

Linda >> !

Melanie >> Yes, Linda

Linda >> This was probably asked in the first chat session a few weeks ago...

Linda >> But why do so many of the links (Classroom Appl. & Try This) no longer work?#

Melanie >> There could be a couple of reasons...

Melanie >> A lot of these links are outside resources that are not maintained by FOR-PD...

Melanie >> If the site moves the content or takes it down, then our link will become inactive...

Melanie >> There are also some links that are our links, but we recently underwent a domain name change and...

Melanie >> some of the links were not updated properly...

Melanie >> If you come across inactive links, you should first check the resources page within each lesson...

Melanie >> It can be found on the last page of each lesson under the task list...

Melanie >> and contains the most up to date links...

Melanie >> If the link is still inactive on the resources page, feel free to contact us and let us know...

Melanie >> we will work to update the link#

Linda >> Thanks...

Melanie >> you're welcome

Linda >> I'll go back & check some of the older FOR-PD Strategy of the month that were "dead". #

Thomas >> hello

Melanie >> For those of you that just joined us, tonight we are answering any technical questions you may have.

Melanie >> Are there any other questions?

Thomas >> I tried to complete the KWL exercise in lesson 2 of the comp 2 course but was unable to modify the adobe document. What did I do wrong?

Melanie >> Thomas, unless you have the professional version of Adobe Acrobat, you will not be able to type into the lit log organizers...

Melanie >> They are provided as reference and for you to be able to print it out...

Thomas >> so I need to upgrade the version that I have?

Melanie >> You will be submitting the literacy log through either the Quiz Tool or the Assignments tool, depending on your section.

Linda >> !

Melanie >> No need to upgrade Thomas. You can complete the lit log following the instructions provided in lesson 1.

Melanie >> Does that answer your question Thomas?

Thomas >> okay, I’ll give it a shot how long will you be here?

Linda >> I've done everything as a Word document, Thomas, and then "cut & pasted" into the various blanks in the lit log and posting area.

Melanie >> We will be here until 8 pm tonight, unless the chat finishes early due to a lack of questions.

Paulette >> !

Melanie >> Linda, did you have a question?

Thomas >> brb

Linda >> Nope, I just wanted to offer Thomas another way to not only complete the various areas, but also to have a saved document for his own records (a Word doc).#

Melanie >> Ok, thank you.

Melanie >> Paulette, your question?

Paulette >> I have an electronic version of the KWL chart that I use with my Business Education students...

Paulette >> If anyone wants a copy just email#

Melanie >> Thank you Paulette.

Melanie >> Does anyone else have any questions for us?

Matthew >> !

Melanie >> Yes Matthew

Matthew >> Just wanted to thank you for all of your answers so far. This is the first time for me taking an online course and being in a chat room. You have made it quite educationally friendly.

Melanie >> You're welcome! Thank you for the compliment.

Matthew >> Anytime. See you next time.#

William >> !

Melanie >> Yes William.

William >> I agree with Matthew. This is my first time too and you have made it quite easy.

Melanie >> Glad to hear that!

Melanie >> Linda W., did you have a question?

Melinda >> !

Melanie >> Linda, to type your question/comment, just hit enter after typing it so that it appears in the main window.

Melanie >> Yes, we will hold all chats in the general chat room.

Melanie >> Melinda, your question?

Melinda >> I was going to offer the enter after typing comment for Linda

Melinda >> #

Melanie >> ok thank you Melinda

Melanie >> Are there any other questions?

Nancy >> !

Melanie >> Ann Marie, your question? Remember to hit enter on your keyboard so that your question shows in the main window.

fac001 >> Ms. Ross, if you have a question, please type it in the field below and hit enter on your keyboard

Barbara >> !

fac001 >> Yes Ms. Boykin, your question?

Barbara >> It took 3 days for my Survey to calculate, does it automatically calculate if there is a problem after you've submitted the quiz?

Melanie >> The quizzes/surveys should be graded automatically once you submit it.

Melanie>> There are times that it is not processed correctly and it may need to be force graded...

Nancy >> !

Ann >> Thanks, we are organizing study groups, and I wanted to be sure.

Melanie >> if you notice that you don't have a grade for your quiz, please contact your facilitator so that he/she can look into it and force grade it.

Barbara >> I was going to retake it, but I checked it tonight before this session and it was graded

Barbara >> The quiz for Lesson 1 did go through properly.

Melanie >> Good.

Melanie >> Nancy, your question?

Ann >> !

Barbara >> Can my survey be checked to see if it calculated properly.

Nancy >> I'm not sure I understand the lit logs.

Melanie >> Barbara, which survey do you mean?

Thomas >> Melanie no luck, can you give me those directions again?

Melanie >> Nancy, I will get to you in a second. Then Ann Marie, then Thomas.

Thomas >> okay

Melanie >> Barbara, if you don't see a grade for your survey, just let your facilitator know or you can call the help desk tomorrow.

Melanie >> Nancy, are you having trouble submitting the lit logs or is it a question on how to complete the assignment?

Nancy >> How to complete them.

Melanie >> I believe there are instructions on the first page of each lesson with details on how you should complete the lit log.

Melanie >> If you have further questions or need clarification, you can always contact your facilitator...

Nancy >> Okay, I will check them then. Thanks

Melanie >> he/she can help you out with explaining the assignments and content.

Melanie >> Ann Marie, your question?

Ann >> I am not sure if I am in the correct chat room. I believe that Rebecca Wilhelm is my facilitator.

Melanie >> This chat tonight is being held by the FOR-PD staff and is for answering technical questions you may have about the course.

Melanie >> I would not know if Rebecca was holding a separate chat tonight.

Ann >> okay, sorry#

Melanie >> No problem.

Melanie >> Thomas, what is the problem you are having with the lit log?

Thomas >> not the lit log, yet. Entering info into the KWL chart.

Melanie >> You will not be able to type into the KWL organizer or any other organizer for future lessons.

Melanie >> They are provided in PDF format for you to be able to print them out...

Melanie >> and as reference material.

Thomas >> oh, otaaaaaaaaay. So I don't need to submit these prior to completing the assignment?

Thomas >> and the lit log?

Kathy >> !

Melanie >> You will not be submitting the charts themselves, but will instead submit the information through the lit log section.

Melanie >> You can print them out and write out your thoughts, then submit them online in the lit log.

Melanie >> Does that answer your question?

Thomas >> ooooooohhh. Now I get it.

Melanie >> Great!

Melanie >> One more question as it is almost 8. Kathy, your question?

Thomas >> 10 q. I gotta go get my child now cya.

Kathy >> !

Melanie >> yes Kathy

Kathy >> It is a pleasure to meet everyone and get to know you. I am so pleased with what I'm learning in my class. I'm not sure if I'm in the right chat room#

Lessie >> Where can we later see all that was asked?

Melanie >> The chat transcript will be up on our website at http://forpd.ucf.edu/resources/chat.html

Kathy >> sorry...I thought I was the only Kathy and did not have a question...

Melanie >> no problem...

Lessie >> thank you!

Melanie >> well thank you everyone for joining us tonight...if you have any other questions, feel free to contact the helpdesk via phone or email

Kathy >> I am a facilitator and was just following along to hear of the problems to help my participants.

Melanie >> forpdhelp@mail.ucf.edu or 1-866-863-7323

Melanie >> Thank you everyone. Have a good night.
