Topic: Technology/Content Questions about FOR-PD Course

Kimberly >> Hi...since we are early can I jump in with a question?

Lourdes >> sure

Kimberly >> What is the purpose of having partners for lesson 2?

Mary >> hi everyone

Lourdes >> Having partners in lesson 2 provides you the opportunity to discuss what you've learned from the reading

Lourdes >> in a normal environment, you would do this for a KWL chart

Lourdes >> learning from one another is an important aspect for the strategy and our course

Kimberly >> in a normal reading class when would you actually use a KWL chart?

Lourdes >> we'll be starting in just a few minutes

Hollye >> I also am wondering the same thing as Kimberly. I can't seem to get partners and I am stressing!!!

Lourdes >> KWL is great for informational text

Kimberly >> got it...thanks#

Lourdes >> I'm just answering a few questions before we begin but officially the chat will begin around 7pm EST

Lourdes >> Hollye, if you're having trouble getting partners, I would email your facilitator and let them know you're looking. That way if they know of someone they can hook you up.

Lourdes >> you may have already tried this

Hollye >> Thank you! :)

Lourdes >> just note that many folks often do their assignments more toward the deadline

Hollye >> Maybe that's why

Lourdes >> a few of my students had a good idea and posted in faculty lounge they were early birds and were hoping to work with other early birds

Lourdes >> that helped

Lourdes >> did you try sending course mail specifically to those you might want to work with? If you review their meet me here, you might find some people that you share a common interest with and then you can send them an email or course mail directly

Lourdes >> for those who just joined us, we'll be starting very soon

Lourdes >> let's give some folks a little extra time

Hollye >> I will try that. What's the difference in Help and Faculty Lounge?

Lourdes >> well, the help is where you have a question for your instructor or perhaps just to gain feedback from other participants

Lourdes >> the faculty lounge is for general questions, off topic stuff

Lourdes >> ask your facilitator which room they prefer you post requests for partners in

Hollye >> Thanks again

Lourdes >> sure

Lourdes >> we'll officially begin in just a few more minutes for those that just came in...we'll be starting in just a minute or two. Want to give everyone a chance to get in the chat room area.

Melanie >> Hello everyone. Welcome to our Technology Chat!

Melanie >> Tonight’s chat will be an hour long.

Melanie >> The first 30-minutes will be dedicated specifically to technology help/questions and the final 30-minutes will include time for specific questions about the course in general or the content of the course.

Melanie >> I would like to introduce the FOR-PD staff present tonight.

Melanie >> Lourdes Smith is our Reading Specialist

Melanie >> My name is Melanie Edwards and I'm the Help Desk Manager.

Melanie >> Before we begin I would like to review the chat protocol. Please follow this protocol to participate in the chat.

Melanie >> The Exclamation Point - !

Melanie >> This exclamation point is like raising your hand. Type this symbol whenever you have a question or a comment related to what is being discussed. The moderator will acknowledge you and you can then ask your question.

Melanie >> The Pound Sign - #

Melanie >> The pound sign indicates that you are finished typing your question or comment. Use this symbol when you are finished with your thought to indicate that you are finished typing.

Melanie >> The Ellipse - . . .

Melanie >> Use the Ellipse when you have a great deal to type so you do not keep participants waiting to read your entire thought. By breaking your comment up, you let participants know you are actively doing something rather than just typing a long response or question.

Melanie >> Be sure to type your message in the white box under "Enter your message below" and hit the Enter key on your keyboard.

Melanie >> That way everyone will see your message.

Melanie >> There's a few things we'd like to point out before we take questions.

Melanie >> First of all, please be sure to read through Lesson 1 thoroughly...

Melanie >> it contains important information that will help you throughout the entire course...

Melanie >> all tools used in the course are explained in Lesson 1...

Melanie >> If you're just getting started with the course...

Melanie >> there have been questions from participants wondering where to find the pre-course survey...

Melanie >> The pre-course survey can be found in the Quizzes section and is required to be taken before quiz 1 becomes available...

Melanie >> If you have taken a quiz and received a passing score (16/20)...

Melanie >> the next lesson's quiz will become available, since the quizzes are conditional...

Melanie >> if a quiz says it's unavailable, check to be sure you have a grade for the previous quiz...

Melanie >> if not, contact your facilitator to have him/her force-grade the quiz...

Melanie >> There have also been several questions about where to complete the literacy log...

Melanie >> The literacy log is also found in the Quizzes section...

Melanie >> Once you click on the lit log you wish to submit, you will then see a screen identical to the quiz screen...

Melanie >> go ahead and click on Begin Quiz, do not worry about the wording...

Melanie >> you are indeed accessing the lit log...

Melanie >> unfortunately you will not be able to type into the graphic organizers...

Melanie >> they are provided as reference and for you to print out...

Melanie >> We can now take technical questions you may have...

Melanie >> Please save any content/assignment questions for Lourdes in the second half hour.

Melanie >> #

Stephanie >> !

Melanie >> yes Stephanie

Stephanie >> I have a question regarding eligibility for certification...

Stephanie >> do I need to wait until the second half?

Melanie >> yes, I would not be able to answer your question, but Lourdes might be able to help.

Melanie >> does anyone have any technical questions?

Lourdes >> you'll be getting a certificate once you complete the course, we will also contact the district office to let them know of your completion

Melanie >> Hi Rena.

Melanie >> Be sure to type into the white box and just hit Enter on your keyboard...

Melanie >> that way everyone can see your message...

Melanie >> did you have a question?

Rena >> Yes

Rena >> First time doing this

Melanie >> that's ok :) - go ahead with your question

Rena >> Is the literacy log the same as the reflection journal?#

Melanie >> The literacy log includes the reflection journal.

Melanie >> Perhaps Lourdes can explain a little bit better.

Rena >> Thank you!

Rena >> Lourdes, can you explain?#

Lourdes >> the literacy log has two areas, a reflection log and a strategy sheet

Dana >> What did I miss?

Lourdes >> directions for completing the literacy log, both parts, are located on the introduction page of each lesson

Joy >> !

Dana >> Is this for FOR-PD?

Lourdes >> for lesson 2, you have a KWL to complete for the strategy and a regular reflection log

Lourdes >> #

Barbara >> !

Dana >> I am on lesson 3.

Melanie >> hi Dana, yes this is FOR-PD

Victoria >> I don't see any text on this page

Melanie >> please use the ! if you have a question

Melanie >> Joy, your question?

Joy >> Quick questions....

Kathy >> !

Dana >> Can anyone state where they found the elements?

Joy >> 1st in regards to working with two others to reflect on the reading...

Joy >> should we do this in the general chat room, or in 1, 2, 3, 4, chat room?

Joy >> ...

Joy >> wondering if this would then be seen by the instructors and appropriate credit given#

Melanie >> Joy...

Dana >> !

Dana >> why !?

Melanie >> conversations in chat rooms 1-4 are automatically saved by WebCT

Melanie >> we can then provide your facilitator with the transcript if requested

Barbara >> does the KWL have to be in chart form or do we just use the format-what I know, want to know, learned

Melanie >> the General chat room...

Joy >> Thank you.....2nd question

Melanie >> is open to all courses...

Melanie >> go ahead joy

Dana >> !

Joy >> in regards to the KWL chat, you mentioned that those are only templates....

Joy >> where will you see the results of our KWL charts?#

Carol >> 3

Melanie >> The charts provided are for you to see the graphic organizer of the strategy...

Barbara >> !

Melanie >> you will actually complete the assignment and submit your information through the Quizzes section...

Melanie >> does that answer your question, Joy?

Joy >> perfectly, thank you kindly#

Melanie >> you're welcome...

Melanie >> ok Barbara, then Kathy, then Dana, then Carol....

Melanie >> Barbara, go ahead

Melanie >> Barbara Romero?

Barbara >> should we do our work in a word format, save it, and then attach for submission

Alice >> !

Melanie >> since not everyone owns Word and it's not a requirement for the course...

Melanie >> it's best to copy/paste from Word into the discussion...

Melanie >> if you're going to attach, please attach as a RTF file, so that everyone can view it.#

Barbara >> thank you#

Kathy >> What hours are the help desk manned?

Melanie >> if you're going to attach, please attach as a RTF file, so that everyone can view it.#

Barbara >> thank you#

Mary >> !

Melanie >> Kathy, the help desk is open M-F 9 am - 4 pm EST...

Dana >> !

Melanie >> and 6-10 pm EST

Melanie >> also Saturday from 10 am - 3 pm EST

Kathy >> thanks#

Melanie >> Dana go ahead

Melanie >> Dana Baker?

Dana >> What elements are being talked of in Lesson 3?

Shyre >> Any one working on Comp 2 lesson 2

Melanie >> Dana, if you can hold on to that question, Lourdes will be speaking of content in the second half hour. We'll begin the content section shortly.

Melanie >> Carol, your question?

Dana >> yes. When is this until?

Melanie >> Dana, the chat will end around 8 pm EST

Carol >> sorry the cat jumped on the keys, but I was wondering...

Lourdes >> we will begin the content/assignment part during the second half

Shyre >> I have a question about the web links when you have the time!

Melanie >> Carol?

Melanie >> Carol?

Melanie >> ok well Rena, did you have another question?

Rena >> I posted my KWL to the Meet Me Here mail for Lesson 2 which was under lesson 1. #

Mary >> How do you attach as RTF file?#

Melanie >> Carol, just go ahead when you're ready to continue your question

Carol >> How do you download Quiz and Lit logs? I am having trouble submitting#

Melanie >> Rena, you posted your lesson 2 discussion in the lesson 1 topic?

Rena >> Yes, because it said to post under Meet Me Here.#

Melanie >> Carol, Lesson 1 provides instructions for completing both the quiz & the lit log. It provides screenshots as well.

Melanie >> Rena, just repost in the proper section or notify your facilitator of the mistake.

Carol >> !

Melanie >> yes Carol?

Carol >> Okay I have a lot of printouts...

Carol >> I will look again...

Carol >> I have taken the pretest and printed out some lessons...

Rena >> !

Melanie >> ok Carol, just give the help desk a call if you need further help and guidance.

Melanie >> Rena?

Rena >> So I need to post my KWL discussion in the quizzes section?>>#

Melanie >> Rena, for lesson 2 there is both a discussion assignment...

Melanie >> which you'll post in the Discussion area of the course..

Melanie >> then there is a literacy log, which you'll submit using the quiz tool.#

Melanie >> If you click on quizzes, you'll see the lesson 2 literacy log listed.#

Rena >> Okay, I got it now. Thanks so much.#

Melanie >> no problem

Melanie >> Ok, I have Alice, Mary, and Shyre. Then we'll move on to content.

Melanie >> Alice, your question?

Alice >> At what time are the lessons due by on Sunday?...

Hollye >> !

Melanie >> all lessons are due by 11:55 pm EST on Saturdays

Alice >> and how many people to a group is allowed?#

Melanie >> the assignment page of the lessons provides the specifics and a rubric you can follow...

Alice >> My facilitator posted Sundays on the course calendar???#

Melanie >> I believe for lesson 2 the requirement is 2-3 partners.

Melanie >> Alice, do you know your section number?

Alice >> Yes...

Alice >> uwf008#

Melanie >> it's possible you have a different schedule, since you're in a university section...

Melanie >> confirm with your facilitator when the assignments are due.

Melanie >> Mary, your question?

Mary >> How do you attach an RTF file?#

Melanie >> Lesson 1 explains how to attach any file to your discussion message.

Alice >> Okay, thank you #

Melanie >> If you need help with creating an RTF file, you can give the help desk a call/email and we can provide instructions.

Mary >> Thanks#

Melanie >> Shyre, you had a question on web links?

Shyre >> I had trouble today with the links to add in the discussion. Lesson 2 comp 2 the web sites would not show correctly when I typed them in. When submitted they showed correctly why!

Melanie >> When composing a discussion message, the link will not show as active (blue)...

Melanie >> once you post the message they will become clickable links and will show up as blue...

Shyre >> I thought I was doing it incorrectly and retyped a few times.

Melanie >> You can also try to use the HTML editor feature of the discussion tool to create hyperlinks. Lesson 1 provides instructions on doing this.

Melanie >> :)

Melanie >> nope, sounds like you're doing fine.

Alice >> !

Melanie >> Ok, Hollye, I'm not sure if you had a technical question or if it was for content, but we'll need to move on to the content half of the chat now...

Shyre >> ok, Blanche remember for next week. Thank you Melanie

Melanie >> if you had a technical question, please call the help desk...

Hollye >> I have done all assignments for Lesson 2 and submitted them. I will submit the partner info when I get partners. If I don't have partners by then, how is my grade affected? I did post a help for partners but I guess a lot of people wait until the deadline. I am concerned and stressed over my grade without the partner info.

Melanie >> Lourdes will take over now, beginning with Hollye's question.

Lourdes >> hello

Lourdes >> my name is Lourdes Smith and I'm the FOR-PD reading specialist

Lourdes >> as we continue with the chat, please remember to use the ! key if you have a question and wait to be called on

Lourdes >> this will help us all a great deal

Dana >> !

Lourdes >> Hollye, notify your facilitator about the partner issue

Barbara >> !

Hollye >> Will do, thanks

Lourdes >> if you find partners, you can always send a course mail to your facilitator and update your literacy log

Lourdes >> you can create a 2nd a literacy Log

Eileen >> I already have a partner

Hollye >> great thanks for your support

Lourdes >> Dana, go ahead

Dana >> Will these elements in lesson 3 include strategies and well as setup?

Lourdes >> Dana, I'm unsure what you mean by setup

Dana >> classroom setup

Lourdes >> for lesson 3 you will use the 3-column note strategy as you read through the text

Lourdes >> the elements for your discussion will come from page 6

Lourdes >> there is a link in the assignment page that will take you to the elements we want you to consider

Dana >> thank you

Lourdes >> sure

Shyre >> Lourdes I have only one partner as well. Do we have to have partners from the same group or can we also use from people that sign in on the chat line !

Lourdes >> Shyre, although 2-3 partners is better, if you can only find one it is better than none

Lourdes >> I'm unsure what you mean by "Chat line"

Barbara >> Can we partner up during this chat? I am looking for partners too#

Shyre >> I'll have another when she comes back from vacation

Lourdes >> if anyone else has a content or assignment question, please "raise your hand" by pressing the ! button and I will call on you

Shyre >> Barbara can we go to another chat Room

Lourdes >> Barbara, you will need to choose a partner in your section. This chat is for all sections

Joy >> !

Lourdes >> joy, go ahead

Joy >> I was wondering if we were allowed to go ahead in our lessons....

Lourdes >> if anyone else has a content or assignment question, please "raise your hand" by pressing the ! button and I will call on you

Barbara >> !

Joy >> if by some miracle :) we get the other lesson done early #

Lourdes >> you can move slightly ahead, but please do not work too far ahead

Rena >> !

Joy >> thank you

Lourdes >> the schedule provided helps the participants stay together

Joy >> understood

Lourdes >> working a lesson or 2 ahead, can be done if you need to do so

Lourdes >> but remember, your facilitator does not have to grade ahead of time

Jerry >> ! When I print out sometimes the right hand side of the page is cut off. How do I fix this?

Carol >> !

Joy >> o.k. #

Lourdes >> Barbara

Barbara >> If there is anyone from Competency 2 who needs a partner please let me know. ..

Barbara >> I posted in the lounge too, but I don't know if anyone reads that

Barbara >> #

Shyre >> Barbara move to chat room 2 and see if it works

Lourdes >> Barbara, we are all from competency 2, but you will need to post a message either in your help discussion board or faculty lounge to find a partner in your section

Lourdes >> Rena, go ahead

Jerry >> I am working with a friend from my school who is taking Competency 2 but not in my group. Do I still need a partner from my group also? !

Barbara >> thank you#

Mary >> !

Jerry >> !

Rena >> I am not having problems with the content so much as I am navigating the system...

Rena >> Can I get help in this from the help desk?>>#

Melanie >> yes Rena, you certainly can

Lourdes >> yes, you can contact them

Melanie >> give us a call tomorrow and we'll be happy to walk you through

Lourdes >> and they will get back with you ASAP

Lourdes >> Mary, you're next

Lourdes >> then jerry

Lourdes >> then Carol

Jerry >> Yes, what do I do about the right hand side of the printout being cut off?

Mary >> My question was answered....I just had to go back and read the messages

Mary >> #

Alice >> !

Lourdes >> Jerry, I'll be right with you, May is right before you first.

Lourdes >> okay

Melissa >> right click on the right side of the page and then click print. See if that helps.

Lourdes >> Jerry, that's a tech question. Mel, do you have a solution or should he call help desk

Jerry >> Thanks, I'll try that.

Melanie >> Jerry, you can try to use the compile tool to print the lesson material..

Melanie >> it will give you a print-friendly format.#

Barbara >> !

Lourdes >> Carol?

Lourdes >> then Alice and Barbara

Jerry >> !

Lourdes >> Alice, go ahead, I think Carol left us

Linda >> !

Carol >> The first quiz would not open...after I had finished survey...

Alice >> Is there a preferred length of content for the responses to discussions and lit logs?#

Melanie >> Carol, check to see if you have a grade for the pre-course survey. If not, contact your facilitator to have it force graded.

Lourdes >> Alice, the length of the responses should be enough to provide a quality answer

Carol >> I have not left... A lot of this chat is helpful and I will try a few things to get quiz and lit log Thanks...

Lourdes >> each answer should be thoughtful and considerate of the text

Lourdes >> and your own experiences

Carol >> I do not have a grade yet...

Alice >> thank you#

Linda >> I am just learning how to use the chat room , so I thought I would give it a try.#

Lourdes >> jerry, you're next

Jerry >> I tried to print out the calendar, too. but I was unsuccessful. How do I do that?

Lourdes >> Jerry's question will be the last question of the evening.

Melanie >> Jerry, do you mean the lesson schedule?

Melanie >> or the course calendar?

Jerry >> I tried to print the calendar for June with the due dates on it.

Barbara >> what exactly does the compile tool do# You skipped me

Barbara >> #

Melanie >> sorry Barbara

Melanie >> I think I can answer both your questions

Melanie >> Jerry, WebCT is set up in frames...

Lourdes >> oops, sorry Barbara

Melanie >> so anything in the main content window will not properly print out if you just hit print on your browser...

Melanie >> unfortunately for other tools/content not within the lessons, you cannot use the compile tool...

Melanie >> you can try to use the Print Preview feature of your browser...

Melanie >> and see if it allows you to print individual frames...

Melanie >> you can also try to copy/paste the text into Word (or similar program) and print from there.

Melanie >> The compile tool combines all (or just some) of the lesson material into one document...

Barbara >> thank you#

Melanie >> and makes it print-friendly...

Melanie >> lesson 1 provides instructions for using the compile tool.

Melanie >> Jerry & Barbara, have I answered your questions?

Barbara >> thank you both, this was helpful#

Melissa >> Jerry, I have always been able to just right click on the main portion and print.

Jerry >> Maybe, I'll give it a try and also consult my friend in the other section. She's more computer savvy than I am.. Thank you all and goodnight. Jerry :)

Melanie >> you're welcome

Lourdes >> If anyone has any further questions on content or assignments, please feel free to email me directly at losmith@mail.ucf.edu.

Hollye >> Thanks for your time and assistance

Melanie >> Well, that will be it for tonight.

Lourdes >> If you have any questions with tech issues, please email forpdhelp@mail.ucf.edu.

Lourdes >> we'll get back with you ASAP

Melanie >> Thank you.

Lourdes >> Have a lovely evening

Alice >> thanks for your help#
