FOR-PD Chat Transcript

Date: August 7, 2007

Time: 7:00-8:00PM EST

Topic: Technology/Content Questions about the FOR-PD Course

FOR-PD Project >> Hello everyone. Welcome to tonight's Technology Help Chat. At tonight's chat, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers about technology used in the course.

FOR-PD Project >> The chat will be an hour long and conclude at 8:00PM.

FOR-PD Project >> I would like to introduce members of the FORPD staff that are present in tonight's chat.

FOR-PD Project >> Melanie Edwards is our Helpdesk Supervisor.

FOR-PD Project >> I'm Richard Scott, FOR-PD's Data Manager.

FOR-PD Project >> I would like to go over the chat protocol for tonight's chat. Please make sure you follow the protocol as this makes the chat flow more smoothly.

FOR-PD Project >> The Exclamation Point - !

FOR-PD Project >> An exclamation point is like raising your hand. Type this symbol whenever you have a question or a comment related to what is being discussed.

FOR-PD Project >> The Pound Sign - #

FOR-PD Project >> A pound sign indicates that you are finished typing your question or comment. Use this symbol when you are finished with your thought to indicate that you are finished typing.

FOR-PD Project >> The Ellipse - . . .

FOR-PD Project >> Use the Ellipse when you have a great deal to type so you do not keep participants waiting to read your entire thought. By breaking your comment up, you let participants know you are actively doing something rather than just typing a long response or question.

FOR-PD Project >> To type in the chat window you must type in the white box below ENTER YOUR MESSAGE HERE and then hit the enter button. What you have typed will show up in the chat window.

FOR-PD Project >> As I said earlier, this chat will cover technology issues and questions. Please make sure you follow the chat protocol if you have a question to ask or something to say.

FOR-PD Project >> If there aren't any questions about the chat protocol - I will turn the chat over to Melanie.

Melanie >> Hello everyone!

Melanie >> We have a small group tonight...

Melanie >> I'll go straight to questions. Does anyone have a tech question I can answer?

Giorgetta >> !

Melanie >> Giorgetta

Giorgetta >> I don't know if this is a tech question, but when I took the quiz for lesson 7, I passed it, put it came back and said I didn't

Giorgetta >> ....

Giorgetta >> why did this happen?

Giorgetta >> #

Melanie >> Did it say you didn't pass it on the first screen you saw immediately after you took it?

Melanie >> And then you saw you actually did have a passing score later when you looked at it again?#

Giorgetta >> No, I viewed the results and read all my answers and saw that I had passed it. The next day, I reviewed all my scores

Giorgetta >> and it told me I only scored 12/20.....so I retook it again and passed it again, but this time it acknowledged

Giorgetta >> I passed it. I had to take it 3 times, which was scary, because I knew I had the correct answers, but the scores

Giorgetta >> were showing otherwise, I should have printed the results as proof, but didn't. Anyway I passed, but was wondering

Giorgetta >> ...

Giorgetta >> what was going on as this was my favorite lesson so far.#

Melanie >> It's hard to say for sure. In the past, some participants have had difficulty in reading the feedback and think they have answered a question correctly, but in actuality, they have not...

Carol >> !

Melanie >> It can get confusing sometimes since the results show a 100% next to the correct answer, whether you answered correctly or not..

Melanie >> I'm not sure if this was what happened or if indeed there was a glitch with your quiz...

Melanie >> but, in the future, you can always contact the help desk, and we'll be happy to take a look at it for you.#

Giorgetta >> Well, I know I had the correct answers because I reviewed the answers after taking the quiz the first time.

Melanie >> Like I said, it's hard to know for sure at this point, what happened at the time.

Giorgetta >> and made sure to double check my answers. Anyway, it's been resolved, so not to fret. Thank you for the input#

Melanie >> If something like this happens again, just give us a call or send us an email.#

Melanie >> sure, you're welcome

Melanie >> Carol, your question?

Carol >> Why can't I reach many of the resources--they say that the page cannot be displayed.

Melanie >> do you mean, tonight? or in general?

Carol >> All through the lessons

Carol >> ...and I'm working on Lesson 11 now.#

Melanie >> There are so many links throughout the course that are outside resources...

Melanie >> that sometimes the web pages go down or they move the article/resource...

Carol >> Thanks

Carol >> #

Melanie >> If you come across this, just send us an email with the lesson, section, and link..

Melanie >> we'll take a look at it and try to update the link#

Carol >> Ok#

Melanie >> Any other questions tonight?

Michael >> 1

Melanie >> yes, Michael?

Melanie >> did you have a question Michael?

Michael >> Explain, again about quiz, Log, and Discussion timetables and retakes?

Melanie >> I'm not sure I understand your question. Do you mean the due dates for each?

Melanie >> Michael, I'm not sure if this will answer your question, but all assignments are due on Saturday by 11:55 pm EST...

Melanie >> If you're not in a university section, you can take each quiz three times, with the exception of the pre & post course surveys...

Melanie >> The literacy log and discussion posting can also be resubmitted if your facilitator requires you do so.#

Melanie >> Does that answer your question?

Melanie >> Well, let me know if you need more information.

Melanie >> Are there any more questions?

Melanie >> The help desk has been pretty quiet these days, so I assume all is running smoothly in the courses.

Melanie >> Depending on when your section began, you may be near the end of the course or a little more than half way...

Melanie >> If near the end of the course, remember that you will need to complete quiz 13, the post-course survey, and the course evaluation, before quiz 14 becomes available.

Giorgetta >> !

Melanie >> Giorgetta?

Giorgetta >> What is the deadline for all lessons?

Giorgetta >> In other words, if we fall behind, can we get an extension from our facilitator?#

Melanie >> Thanks for the clarification...

Melanie >> You will need to ask your facilitator...

Giorgetta >> okay.#

Melanie >> it is up to him/her to allow participants an extension.#

Melanie >> I'd like to also remind everyone that if you ever have a content/assignment question, you should first contact your facilitator for clarification/help...

Giorgetta >> thanks - will try to stay on schedule, was just wondering in case.#

Melanie >> but, you can also always contact our Reading Specialist, who can help with these types of question.

Melanie >> Our Reading Specialist, Lourdes Smith, can be reached via email at losmith@mail.ucf.edu.#

Melanie >> Speaking of Lourdes...

Melanie >> she has just joined our chat and will be happy to answer any questions you may have for her.#

Lourdes >> Hello

Lourdes >> Sorry I'm a little late...

Lourdes >> I am at the Just Read, Florida Leadership Conference

Lourdes >> But I wanted to stop by and see if there were any questions or concerns about the content or assignments in the course

Lourdes >> Does anyone have any questions? Please feel free to ask#

Melanie >> Are there any more questions for tonight? Either tech questions or content/assignment questions?

Giorgetta >> none here#

Marcia >> thanks

Melanie >> Well if there are no more questions, we can wrap up the chat for tonight.

Melanie >> If you think of anything, feel free to contact us.

Melanie >> Thank you everyone and have a great evening!

Lourdes >> Thank you!
